The history of modern hip hop

Hip-hop is more than a genre: it is a cultural movement that encompasses music, poetry, dance, art, fashion, and political philosophy. Many people use rap and hip-hop interchangeably, but strictly hip-hop is a cultural movement (including music), while rap is a specific musical technique often used in hip-hop music

Hip hop has four characteristics:

– Rapping or (MCing): is a vocal style that uses rhythm and poetry, but usually does not have a melody. It’s less like singing. With the rise of hip-hop culture, the word “rap” took on a narrower definition. Today, rapping is a distinctive feature of hip-hop music.

– Turntablism (DJing): It is a kind of making music with a music player. Using songs produced by other artists, a DJ creates a mix, combining sounds and manipulating the music to create a new song.

Hip hop has four characteristics

– Breakdancing or (BBoy / BGirling): is an acrobatic dance style, Breakdancing has been one of the main characteristics of hip-hop culture since its inception, but because it is very difficult to learn, it has not gained the main popularity of other aspects of hip-hop. .

– Street art or (graffiti): is a visual art that is usually made using spray paint and a lively visual style. Of course, not all graffiti is associated with hip-hop culture, but the hip-hop movement created a unique graffiti style that is instantly recognizable

History of hip hop music:

Hip-hop is a culture and an artistic movement that emerged from the Bronx in New York City in the early 1970s. Its development reflected the negative effects of post-industrial decline, a rapidly changing political and economic discourse.

Looking at New York City during this time, we see an economic collapse. The city’s economy was collapsing due to the decline of the manufacturing industry and the construction of the Cross Bronx Expressway. Most of the white middle class moved to the suburbs to escape social and economic challenges. Conditions worsened in neighborhoods populated prominently by African-American, Puerto Rican, and Caribbean immigrants. Urban desperation also led to increased crime, gang violence, and poverty.

As a result, businesses closed their doors, eliminating many economic opportunities and sources of entertainment. As a result, urban youth turned to the streets for fun and self-expression. Abandoned buildings and parking lots provided the ground for parties. These parties provided the foundation associated with early hip-hop culture. DJs and MCs brought the music by setting up “sound systems” introduced by Jamaican culture. The cardboard sheets became the dance stage, the dancers, and the brick walls became the canvas for murals.

Since 1979, hip-hop has become a popular genre. This popularity continued and spread throughout the world.

The influence of hip hop music on other music:

Hip hop has had a significant impact on most types of music. Some artists have mixed hip-hop beat or rap with rock and roll, heavy metal, punk rock, merengue, salsa, cumbia, funk, jazz, house, rap, reggae, highlife, m-ballax and soul.

Since the early 1990s, there has been a close and special connection between hip-hop music and sad music.

During the 1980s, popular groups such as Run-D.M.C used both hip-hop and hard rock in new genres, such as “Walk This Way”.

This genre also influenced various styles of electronic music, trip hop, jungle, UK garage, grime and other genres.

The growth of hip hop:

In 1979, hip-hop became a popular genre, especially among young people. This popularity continued and in 1990 it became global and widespread. One of the main reasons for the popularity of rap was its differences and deconstructions. In this style, they did not adhere to the frameworks and rules that were previously defined in music, and in general, rap music was flexible compared to other styles. Among the other verbal features of rap that distinguished it was that it broke the general frameworks of poetry, and the poems were creative and included criticism, even sometimes with violence and obscenity. In fact, the hip-hop style expressed the feelings of the young generation openly and told the realities and social and economic problems that plagued the lower classes of society. In fact, hip-hop activists tried to protest the ruling situation. The sharp beat of this style indicated their heartaches and anger from social problems. Rappers in rap and hip-hop were completely indifferent to the conventional structures of composition or rhyming, which also brought its own message. The essence of hip-hop and rap is to criticize the existing disorderly situation and protest against the formal structure of modernism because of the problems they imposed on them.
